With climate change and rising sea water levels, the topic of coastal protection is becoming increasingly important. Therefore, the II. Oldenburgische Dikeband decided in favor of the Jade-Wapeler Siel construction project. Construction work started in 2016 and was completed in 2020/2021.
On the one hand, the water of the river is diverted through the Sieltore into the Jade Bay through the Jade/Wapel estuary pumping station. In the case of large amounts of rain, pumps can also take on these tasks.
On the other hand, the sluice structures were adapted to the current dyke height (+8.80mNHN) in this area and thus serve to protect the coast.
After completion of the construction work, you can also cycle directly on the dike from Vareler Hafen in the direction of the Wesermarsch and of course in the opposite direction.
