The construction of St. Clement's Cathedral in Aarhus began in 1201 in the Romanesque style. Remnants of this church can still be seen. Later, in the years 1450 to 1520, the church was expanded into a Gothic cathedral and provided with an altarpiece by Bernt Notke as well as a baptismal font and lime paintings. In addition to church services, church concerts are often held in the church.

The cathedral is 93 meters long and 96 meters high, making it both the longest and tallest church in Denmark. Notable features of the cathedral include the high altar and the Baroque tombstones.Eight bells hang in the bell tower, the oldest ("Martinus") dating from the 13th century. A lightning strike in 1642 damaged not only the tower but also several bells. The interior is over 220 square meters (230 square feet) of frescoes, most of which date from 1470 to 1520.
