    Lasa marble

    The "white gold" from Jennwandbruch

The purest marble in Europe has been mined high above Göflan and the idyllic village of Laas at the foot of the Ortler massif for centuries. This marble is not only pure, but also hard, tough and weatherproof. During guided tours and marble hikes to the Weißwasserbruch, the “Göflanerbruch” or the inclined railway that transports the heavy blocks into the valley, visitors immerse themselves in the exciting history of Lasa and Göflaner marble. The interior of the centuries-old marble quarries itself cannot be visited for safety reasons.

The summer festival “Marble & Apricots” in Laas is all about the region's outstanding products: marble handicrafts and apricots. The exuberant event offers a colorful supporting program with art, craft, culinary arts and music.

History of the Lasa marble vein

The milestones along the Roman road Via Claudia Augusta were already made from Lasa marble in ancient times, and in the Middle Ages the white stone from the Nördersberg in Vinschgau was used for portals, coats of arms and ornaments, especially in castles in Vinschgau. The marble vein, which was temporarily forgotten, was rediscovered in the 19th century, since then Lasa marble has been mined again in the Jennwand and Weißwasserbruch. Today the Lasa marble and the marble from the Göflan quarry are mainly used in construction, architecture and art. In order to make the extremely versatile stone interesting for artists, the vocational school for stone processing was founded in Laas in 1982.
