Waldkirchen is the centre and largest town in the southern Bavarian Forest. The town lies between the three-river city of Passau and the Bavarian Forest National Park, close to the border triangle of Bavaria, the Czech Republic and Austria. Waldkirchen has also been a market and the most important trading centre on the Golden Trail, the trade route to Bohemia, since 1285.
