The oldest traces of human habitation in Roermond have been discovered at the base of the current cathedral tower. From about 1200, more and more buildings began to be added, and the first parish church was erected on that site.

When the city was later walled, the old parish church was placed outside the city walls. Therefore, around 1410, the construction of a new parish church was started. The St. Christopher's Cathedral that we know today.

The cathedral is mainly built in the late Gothic style and consists of a five-aisled nave with a west tower, projecting transepts and a three-aisled hall choir.
