Tips

  • A predecessor building to the Roermond town hall already existed in 1399 and was called raithuys at the time. This building was destroyed by a devastating fire in the city center of Roermond on July 16, 1554. The city received 200 gold guilders annually for six years to rebuild the town hall. To prevent fire protection, slate or tiled roofs were built instead of reed or wooden roofs during the construction work.Around 1700, the town hall was extensively renovated and construction began on the knight's chamber, which, according to 19th century descriptions, is identical to today's mayor's room. Since then, the town hall has served, among other things, as a meeting point for the states of the Oberquartier von Gelre (Dutch: Overkwartier von Gelre).[4] At the same time, a room was created for the representatives of the states, namely today's Estates Hall, also known as the Wedding Hall.In 1876 the facade was modernized in the French style. The old entrance door and the three dormers also date from this period. The renovation work as a result of the damage caused by the Second World War only began in October 1953 and lasted until 1955. Due to the growing need for space, a new four-story building with a basement was soon built behind the town hall.In 2004 the Estates Hall was restored to its original condition.Source: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rathaus_Roermond

  • Town hall from 1700 with a chime with 49 bells donated to the city of Roermond on the occasion of its 750th anniversary (1982). The chimes play every day at 12 o'clock and then the figure game revolves! Very special (info from free city walk Roermond)

  • "Above the town hall, in the gate, you can hear and see a carillon, donated to mark the 750th anniversary of the city of Roermond.
The carillon has 47 bells in four octaves with a total weight of 1700 kg. It can be played both automatically and manually. In 1995, the carillon was supplemented with a group of important figures that open the gates of the town hall every day at 12 noon. The group of figures consists of the architect (Dr. Cuypers), the tailor, the fool, the papermaker, the bishop (Van Hoensbroeck), the organ player, the blacksmith and the princess (Maria Theresia). All figures have a connection to the history of Roermond."
