    Text of the signpost:
    Hengstener Bach
The Hengstener Bach rises from several small streams and springs within the hamlet of Spieckern. The first third of its almost 3 km long stream lies in a wide meadow valley. After crossing the valley through the path between Niedersondern and Nöllenberg, the valley narrows, the slopes of which are densely wooded. Only in the last third after the left tributary of the Sönderchen Siefens, which rises at the upper end of Steinhauser Straße, does the valley widen again. According to an old legend, the ghost of a villain who caused harm to his maid here around 1600 and was punished with death for it still haunts the area of the Sönderchen Siefens near the so-called "Brossteich".
Between the Siegelberg and the Gangolfsberg, a 14th century militia crossed the valley, the remains of which can still be seen today.
Hengsten, after which the stream takes its name, was originally called Henstwerdt
(1547), was an island in the Wupper and was only later moved to the Wupper slope. Since Hens was a form of the name Hans at the time, the name Henstwerdt, which was later also written Hengstwerth and shortened to Hengsten, means "island of Hans", who was probably one of the earliest owners. With the construction of the "Vor der Hardt" road in the 1870s (this location), a wall was built in the mouth area. The stream passes under this wall in a pipe and flows into the Beyenburg reservoir, the Wupper, which has been dammed since 1953.
Today the stream flows along its entire length through a nature reserve in the Wuppertal East landscape plan (2004).
There is no path along the stream.
