In the middle of the Habichtswald lies the Teufelsmauer next to the path.
This wall is of natural origin and part of a former quarry. In this quarry, the basalt for the construction of the Hercules monument was mined in the 18th century.
The wall is about 30 meters long and between 8 and 10 meters high and is made of basalt or tuff rock that was formed by rising, molten magma. Since it could not reach the surface of the earth, it dodged sideways into softer sedimentary rock, where it gradually cooled.
This is how today's natural monument was able to form.
Very impressive sight!
