The Janubio salt flats in Lanzarote are the largest of their kind in the Canary Islands and form a man-made landscape of great architectural and cultural value. Today they still produce the white gold, which until relatively recently was of great importance to the island's economy. The salt flats lie in a lagoon created by volcanic eruptions that created a lava barrier to the sea. The salt flats have been declared a site of scientific interest because of their importance as a resting place for migratory birds.
