In the Gewann Zugmantel-Bandholz sand was mined for a long time. 1980 ended the operation. After filling the pit with excavated soil and rubble, the area was reforested in the southwest with Scots pine and oak. The sandy areas in the pit center, however, remained largely open without overlap. In a few years, the originally existing fauna and flora appeared on the not used sandflures. This called the conservation on the plan. The once extensive dune areas of the Northern Oberheinebene had declined at that time, with the exception of a few remaining areas. The unique, landscape typical monuments threatened to disappear altogether. Thus, already in 1986, the under protection position of the former sand pit Zugmantel-Bandholz, almost at the same time with the protected area designation of the horse drive dune Sandhausen.

Since 2005, the NSG Zugmantel-Bandholz belongs to the FFH area "Sand Areas between Mannheim and Sandhausen".
