Against forgetting the bad time of the inner-German division

Between 1961 and 1989, at least 140 people were killed at the Berlin Wall alone or died in direct connection with the GDR border regime. In addition, at least 251 travelers died during or after checks at Berlin border crossings. Countless people died out of grief and despair over the effects of the construction of the Wall on their lives.

The Berlin Wall Memorial, the Parliament of Trees, the Wall Memorial in the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus and other memorial sites that were built in West Berlin between 1961 and 1989 now commemorate the victims of the Berlin Wall.

These memorial plaques, which can be found again and again on the Wall Trail, show:

Peter Kreitlow (born January 15, 1943 in Berlin, † January 24, 1963 at Hennigsdorf) was a fatal to the Berlin Wall. Members of the Soviet occupation forces shot him trying to escape in a forest near Hennigsdorf. He was the only wall tomb shot by Soviet soldiers.

Franciszek Piesik (born November 23, 1942, † October 17, 1967 in Berlin) was a Polish victim of the Berlin Wall. He drowned in an escape attempt to West Berlin in Niederneuendorfer See.
