    Landwehr - Wolbeck Zoo

It concerns here a border fortifications of the Münsterland.

This kind of ramparts were built to strengthen the boundaries of the district; they were called "lantwere" or "munitio". If the protection of the parish borders did not prove to be sufficiently secure, the natural borders in the Münsterland have been supplemented by "living" protective walls and ditches since the Middle Ages.

The two-wall system with a main wall, a ditch and a small accompanying wall is sometimes reinforced by further walls, as is the case here on the ascent. With a trench width of around 20 m, the entire wall width is over 50 m, the crest of the wall being approx. 2 m above the bottom of the trench. Trees or bushes were planted on the ramparts, mainly of hard or prickly growth and good ability to lift sticks, e.g. ash, hornbeam, hazelnut and hawthorn, sloe, blackberry. The wood was only broken every few years and not separated from the root stock, so that it kept greening itself.

The branches were pulled down again and again, bent and woven together. Over time, a living protective hedge was formed as a defense system, which was an unmistakable border and an impenetrable obstacle for people and cattle.
