The Untere Isar natural area - a jewel in Bavaria
Despite the enormous human intervention in the natural area of the Lower Isar, this area is to be classified as extremely valuable.
The riparian forests of the Lower Isar between Gottfrieding and Plattling are among the largest and last contiguous riparian forests in Bavaria. Due to their peculiarity, they have been reported to the EU by the government of Lower Bavaria as a bird protection area (special protected area) and FFH area (flora-fauna-habitat area). Thus, the Lower Isar near Piel Weichs is part of the European Natura 2000 network of biotopes.
In the area between Ettling and Plattling there are a wide variety of valuable habitats, such as natural nutrient-rich lakes, aquatic and reed vegetation and siltation zones, species-rich wet meadows and tall herbaceous meadows, softwood and hardwood alluvial forest, as well as ravine and mixed sloping forests.
These biotope types are home to rare species of flora and fauna that enjoy international protection. The protected animals of the area include the beaver, the bluethroat, the middle woodpecker, the narrow diaper snail, the dormouse, the brook mussel, the natural fish species (mud whip, schied, nerd, schrätzer, white-flossed gudgeon and female nerf) as well as the green wedge damsel.

Great area with lots of animals and plants. Nature is mostly left to itself. The paths can also suddenly end if they are overgrown or blocked by fallen trees.
