In principle, the name "Road to the Kienitz bridgehead" is correct, because in the early morning hours of January 31, 1945, advance detachments of the Soviet 5th Shock Army and the 2nd Guards Tank Army crossed the Oder and formed a bridgehead, which they further expanded. Kienitz was the first place in what later became the GDR to be taken by Soviet troops.

Originally, however, this cobblestone path is the old Kienitzer Fährstraße. From 1681 to 1945, a ferry shortened the route from Kienitz to Hälse, today's Porzecze in Polish territory. The place, the Pieseberge (of which the highest is the "Monte Casino" at 25.8 m) once belonged to Kienitz along with the Fährkrug.
