Rastatt fortress had a total of five gates: the two main gates, Karlsruher and Kehler Tor, and the side gates, Rheintor, Ottersdorfer Tor and Niederbühler Tor. Of this, only the monumental gate structures of the Karlsruhe and Kehler gates in the neo-romantic style have been preserved. The other gates were dragged.

One of the two main gates in north-south direction of the former Rastatt federal fortress (1842 - 1890). With neo-Gothic decorated battlements and turrets. A few meters away is the entrance to the casemates of "Bastion 27". A former work with loopholes that was used to monitor the fortress moat. Together with the Kehler Tor at the south exit, the Karlsruher Tor is one of the two remaining gates of the federal fortress.
