Preston Dock opened in 1892 and, at the time, was the largest single dock in the country. The basin was named after Queen Victoria's first son, Albert Edward the Prince of Wales, due to the Prince laying the dock foundation stone in 1885.

Although Preston port was never a major port, it has played a vital role in developing ferry transport as a pioneer for roll on roll off transportation. Opened by Albert Edward Dock in 1892, the port grew from strength to strength, welcoming 16% of the UK's goods.

Today, the docks has been redeveloped to include restaurants, flats and shops.
