There is a legend about the approximately 1 meter high limestone cross with a chiseled woodcutter's ax. Published in 1950 in the book of legends and fairy tales “Rund um den Alheimer”: The eldest sons of two families from Breitau and Ulfen lived in strife, partly because of business envy, because both earned extra income with pension services and partly because they were in one and the same girl were in love. The two rivals and the boys from both villages got into a violent argument at the fair, so that the neighborly peace between Breitau and Ulfen was now poisoned. One night, after fetching wood, the two opponents met with their carts on the country road, neither evaded, instead they chased the horses against each other, seized their axes, jumped from their wagons and killed each other. The pastor refused to give them a Christian burial after this bloody act; they were buried on the spot. The two fathers shook hands over the grave of their children in reconciliation. In memory of that gruesome act they placed this atonement cross. Both places were released from their curse and found peace and quiet again.

The stone cross is now located about 800m south of the southern outskirts of Breitau at a small rest area with a bench, on the footpath or cycle path towards Ulfen.
The stone cross has been moved several times, most recently after a traffic accident in 1988, in which the stone broke and has since been repaired.
The stone cross is evenly worked; The head and arms are the same length and rounded. An ax is grooved on the visible surface, the blade in the crossing field, the handle on the left of the shaft.
