The Amrum Mill is the oldest windmill in Schleswig-Holstein.
It was built in 1770-1771 on the highest elevation in the town and operated by the first miller,
    Erk Knudten.
In 1963 the last miller, Hans Kristensen, had to stop operations for economic reasons. From 1964 onwards the Association for the Preservation of the Amrum Windmill e.V.
took over the windmill and converted the former storage rooms into a museum, which opened on June 28, 1964.
Here you can experience the island's history from several centuries: seafaring and whaling, agriculture, Frisian living culture and the early settlement history of the island. The summer exhibitions with paintings by changing artists with predominantly Amrum-specific motifs are particularly popular.

The windmill in fog is one of the few still fully functioning windmills from historic times in North Frisia. It was built in 1771 on the highest point of the island.
In this Erdholländerwindmühle peeled barley in the first years. In 1922, the windmill was rebuilt into a cellar dutchman and an adjoining shed was used to store the grain. In 1963, the grinding operation was discontinued. On the initiative of the island's pastor Pörksen, an association kept the mill and transformed the building complex into a museum of local history. The mill exhibits the history of the house, the flora and fauna of the island and the sea, pre- and protohistoric finds and folklore objects.

      The opening times
the mill and the local museum are:
      daily from 10.30am - 1pm and 2.30pm - 5pm
Mondays to 16.00 clock and Sundays from 11.00 clock
Museum open from April to October

The small museum inside the mill is also very interesting.
