"Lüneburg Heath" nature reserve
License plate: NSG LÜ 002The area includes larger areas of the Lower Saxon Geest between Buchholz and Soltau with a landscape characterized by extensive heath areas, moors, clear heath streams and near-natural deciduous forests as well as coniferous forests and is unique in its nature. In particular in the area of a terminal moraine range, the most well-known of which is the Wilseder Berg, extensive dwarf shrub and juniper heaths, scattered species-rich mat grass lawns, have developed through traditional heath farming and have been preserved through maintenance measures, which today bear witness to the image of what used to be the predominant part of the Geest-encompassing heathland.Characteristic for the appearance of this landscape, which is important not only for culture but also for a large number of species, are the areas with common heather, which are divided into large areas by juniper stands and show a small-scale and dynamic location mosaic. On inland dunes there are transitions to dry grassland with bent and silver grass. In groundwater-affected, partly boggy depressions, damp heaths with bell heather can be found, in which the inflorescences of the endangered bog lily set yellow color accents. In places there are transitions to the typical raised bog vegetation, which also occurs to a greater extent in the Pietzmoor south-east of Schneverdingen.nlwkn.niedersachsen.de/nreservate/nreservation-luneburger-heide-42732.html

The Lüneburg Heath has its own charm in every season. Not only when the heather blossoms in late summer, when the wide meadows glow purple, but also in winter, when a delicate hoarfrost lies over the quiet landscape. In spring, the juniper and many meadow flowers bloom, and in the warm autumn, the leaves of the birch and oak trees change colour.

You should definitely cycle through the Lüneburg Heath. Definitely worth it. There are countless small paths where everyone can drive their own individual route.
