The Florence Cathedral (Italian: Duomo di Firenze), officially the Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flower (Italian: Cattedrale Metropolitana di Santa Maria del Fiore[1]), is a Roman Catholic church in Florence and the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Florence. It was consecrated on March 24, 1436 by Pope Eugene IV. The nave can accommodate around 4,000–5,000 people. The enormous dome, Brunelleschi's main work, is considered a technical masterpiece of the early Renaissance.

Construction of the cathedral began at the end of the 13th century, when the Florentines no longer wanted to excel only in commercial skills, but also in architecture. The original design was by Arnolfo di Cambio. After a brief pause following Di Cambio's death in 1310, construction continued in 1334 under the direction of Giotto di Bondone. Santa Maria del Fiore was not completed until the 15th century.
