The Altenburg is the oldest populated part of Merseburg. The monastery complex used to be much larger and is of Romanesque origin. The complex was first mentioned around 800. In 1091 Sankt Petri was consecrated as a church of the Benedictine order. In 1562 the secularization took place and parts of the monastery were demolished, the south-western part of the enclosure with Romanesque cellar vaults was preserved. The monastery has not been used as such for a long time. In the past century it was set up as a natural history museum.
