When an important trade route crossed here in the early Middle Ages, the safe crossing of the large nests was still a challenge. Changing shallows, currents at high water levels and floating debris could make driving the ford a dangerous venture. Today the ford is often used as a swimming area. Not far from this point, a small bridge, the Wilhelmsteg, leads over the Nister.
