The church building is a late Gothic church built in the 15th century. In the deed of approval of November 8, 1499, the bishop of Utrecht, Frederik van Baden, confirmed the founding of the church by the craftsmen. The oldest part of the present church is the choir and sacristy, the present sacristy or council chamber of the church. A cruciform church dedicated to Mary must have stood here as early as 1468.
