Nowadays, the stepping stones are historic way to cross the River Hodder in front of the Inn at Whitewell.
Historically, they were enabling residents on the opposite bank to access the Swainmote court and the church.

Always assess the river conditions before crossing, and if uncertain, consider alternative routes such as nearby bridges.
