"Bancs-reposoirs du Roi de Rome"In the Arrondissement of Strasbourg alone, 125 benches were set up every “une demi-lieue” (half an hour's walk).Rest bench in front of a crucifix.
The shape corresponds roughly to "Figure 5 - Reposior simple" of a circular in which the mayor's offices were asked to set up more benches. The cost estimate for this model was 11o f.oo c (this type of bench had variants with a post on the side and the post in the middle and two benches); see Circulaire Préfectorale du 31.12.1812, quoted in Y. Bonnel 1982, op.
The strange assignment of crucifix and "Napoleon bench" in Germany occurs more frequently in Alsace and should be given more consideration when looking for historical locations for benches. The crucifix stands on a 120 cm high pedestal, the top plate is 117 cm wide and 75 cm deep. The inscription in the base
Es Jst Volbracht Joh 19 Cap 30 can also be interpreted in this sense as a storage area for top loads.
The bank is at the junction of a dirt road 2 km from Altenstadt.
Left in the left post inscription ALTENSTADT, this suggests that the post also served as a signpost or hour stone. The inscription on the second line ILHL (?) Is illegible and may have been attached without authorization. (Author Rudolf Wild, Annweiler)Link "the origin of the Napoleonic banks":

The benches, named after Napoleon Bonaparte, are slightly different from hearthstones, but serve the same purpose: to comfortably unload one's head and sit down. They are similar in appearance to the letter "A": on the right and left two sandstone pillars, on top of them a transverse sandstone block (lintel) which served to place loads, and a transverse sandstone block for sitting.
