After the end of the Second World War, the lack of fuel led to increased clearing in the Brook and thus to considerable loss of the historical tree population in the Sassenberg zoo. This particularly affected the birch avenue, of which two thirds of the trees were felled by order of the American occupation. Some Sassenbergers were assigned to saw the tree trunks by hand to a length of two meters so that they could be shipped to the USA. In the later decades, the remaining birch population was increasingly displaced by other trees, especially acacias, so that the birch avenue gradually lost its typical avenue character. For some years now there have been efforts to restore the original state by planting new birch trees.
