It was especially interesting hiking along the "Mur de la Peste" ("Plague Wall") in the tail-end of Covid. It was built to stop people coming into the Papal enclave around Avignon during an outbreak of the bubonic plague. My picture shows the remains of one of the sentry posts. Ironically, it didn't work. The plague arrived in Avignon about the same time it was dying down in the rest of Provence. The wall remained in operation, but this time with different soldiers trying to stop people moving in the opposite direction!
