The Kempische Plateau covers a third of the surface of the province of Limburg. The plateau was formed from the deposits of sand, gravel, rock and boulders that the Maas washed up from the Ardennes during the last ice age. The Meuse has thus created a new river bed in its own debris field and a steep edge and a sudden height difference of 50 meters have arisen.

This so-called steep edge runs from north to south, parallel to today's Maas, from Opoeteren (Maaseik) to Gellik (Lanaken), over a length of 20 kilometers. Perpendicular to this rim, small valleys were carved out by rainwater and meltwater. Water still flows out of some of these small valleys (Asbeek, Zijpbeek), but in most of them the water has run dry. In this case one speaks of a dry valley.
