Fort Uhrich is now a park in the south of Illkirch-Graffenstaden. A hiking trail / singletrack leads around the complex. The overgrown ruins of the former fortifications were once part of the built after the annexation of Alsace by the German Reich in 1871 fortress belt around Strasbourg, which consisted of 14 forts and other bastions, so-called intermediate works.

The Strasbourg Fortress Belt (also known as the Grand Fortress of Strasbourg) was a defensive ring of 19 forts that ran extensively around the city of Strasbourg. The individual forts were built after the incorporation of Alsace-Lorraine into the German Empire from 1871 as Biehlersche unit forts. Today the fortifications, some of which still remain, are linked by the cross-border cycle path to the forts.[
