The Civic Tower of Este, commonly known as Porta Vecchia, was built in 1690 on the site of the previous gate, which was destroyed. In the 18th century, no longer serving military or defensive purposes, the building was characterized by its elegant and scenic appearance: on the side facing the square, a large clock was placed which features, in addition to the Roman numerals for the 12 hours, the phases of the moon.
