The church, built in the 12th century, was completely bombed at the end of the Second World War on April 10, 1945 (three days before the occupation) by American bomber units during an air raid on Volkstedt and burned to the ground. The nave was rebuilt in a simplified form in 1949/50 - initially without a tower. The tower followed later, with a simple roof (formerly a baroque dome). After the fall of the Wall, the church was completely renovated. The Gothic staggered altar from the 15th century has been preserved.
