    Hiking

According to the municipality of St. Goar, the ruins of Rheinfels Castle are the largest castle ruins on the Rhine. The floor plans and the very informative presentations (information material, museum) provide an excellent insight into the history of fortifications.
At the time of construction, the buildings were up to 3 floors higher than they are today! The castle, built by the Count of Katzenelnbogen in the middle of the 13th century, was primarily used to secure customs duties and was expanded into a fortress in the 16th/17th century. Hiking

Rheinfels Castle is the ruin of a spur castle on a ridge between the left bank of the Rhine and the Gründelbach valley above St. Goar. After it was expanded into a fortress, it was the largest defensive structure in the Middle Rhine Valley between Koblenz and Bingen and was only surpassed by the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, which lies in the Middle Rhine Valley above the Koblenz district of the same name on the right bank of the Rhine. Since 2002, Rheinfels Castle has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley.
