With eight machine sets and an installed capacity of 320 megawatts (MW), the Hohenwarte II pumped storage plant is the largest hydropower plant on the Saale in Thuringia. It has been in operation since 1966. The upper basin is an artificially created lake with a capacity of around three million cubic meters of water, sufficient for seven hours of full-load turbine operation. The Eichicht dam, with a capacity of around five million cubic meters of water, serves as a lower basin. It is also the lower basin for the Hohenwarte I pumped storage plant.
