The history of the Protestant parish church in Weißbriach and also the overall religious development of the region is a special one. During the Reformation there was a strong expansion of Lutheranism in Austria - also in Weißbriach. In the time of the Counter Reformation from 1576, however, Protestant services were banned under Emperor Rudolf II, and churches and schools were closed. A state Reformation Commission was founded and as a result, the country was re-Catholicized from 1600 onwards - Protestants were mistreated, executed and had to resettle.
