Near St. Martin's Church rises the impressive 'Mons Piétatis' or Mount of Mercy, which was built between 1629 and 1633 by Wenceslas Coeberger. The "Berg van Charitate" was at the time one of the first fifteen public pawn shops established in the Southern Netherlands by the engineer-architect. Coeberger was also responsible for the draining and reclamation of the eastern swamp area of De Moeren. Today, the former pawn shop houses the city archives with the rich library of St. Winok's Abbey and since 1956 also the Municipal Museum. The first includes many illuminated manuscripts, including the hagiographies of Saints Winok, Oswald and Lewinna by the 11th-century monk Drogo van Terwaan; the second is mainly a painting museum, with works by well-known and lesser-known Flemish, French and Italian masters, but also with art treasures from the abbey, souvenirs from local history and an ornithological collection.
