    Former military training area now part of the National Natural Heritage

    The National People's Army and then the German Armed Forces practiced on the site for many years. After the military training area was closed in 2014, the federal government decided to protect the extensive grassland in the long term. The DBU natural heritage area Forstberg is one of the 156,000 hectares nationwide that the federal government has transferred to various actors - such as the DBU natural heritage - as national natural heritage. As a piece of the jigsaw puzzle, the area is intended to help Germany achieve its nature conservation goals set out in the National Strategy on Biological Diversity .
