Originally, the hilltop castle consisted only of a mighty square residential tower from the Romanesque period, dating to the 12th century. The elongated rectangular (not square) shape of the residential tower and the crenellated top are notable. Since the 14th century, Goyen's owners have changed frequently. The castle is now privately owned in the Netherlands.
