The tarpan (Equus ferus) is a species of horse that became extinct in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is often seen as a western form of the wild horses that were once widespread in Eurasia. Records of this horse may date back to antiquity. However, it only became widely known in the course of the 18th century through several explorers who observed the animals on their expeditions through Eastern Europe.

The "tarpans" of Hardehausen are back-bred animals that are intended to look as similar as possible to the original wild horse. What exactly this horse looked like has been debated by experts for decades. But there is no doubt that the tarpans are one of the visitors' favorites in the bison enclosure. They have lived in the valley meadows in Hardehausen for 60 years. The horses moved in just one year after the bison enclosure was set up in autumn 1959. Very nice, even with children you have the Tarpan enclosure, wild boar, bison and you can go on nice tours. The path leads beautifully through the valley along the stream.
