The Salern castle ruin is a hilltop castle near Vahrn in South Tyrol that has been preserved in the remains of the wall. After the destruction of the nearby Voitsberg castle ruins by Bruno von Kirchberg, Salern Castle was built as an episcopal court castle from 1277 and was first mentioned in a document in 1280. After several changes of ownership and pledges, Salern Castle was extensively rebuilt in the 2nd half of the 15th century. As early as 1554, requests were made to Bishop Cristoforo Madruzzo to repair the structural damage to the castle. In 1624 the castle was already described as invaded and used as a quarry in the second half of the 19th century. In 1872 Alois Andreas von Hellrigl finally acquired the ruins to safeguard the state. Only a few remains of the ring and palace walls of the keep have survived that can be visited.
