The Ödland Chapel is a true gem in the Hotzenwald Forest and boasts a rich history. At the end of the 18th century, the farmers of Bergaling built a small chapel here in gratitude after their village was spared from the rinderpest epidemic. Following a fire in 1897, the current stone pilgrimage chapel, dedicated to the Holy Cross, was built. A particularly atmospheric feature: every year on the first Sunday in September, a pilgrimage service brings life to this special place.

Ödland Chapel
The construction of the Ödland Chapel dates back to around 1780. At that time, cattle plague had broken out in the Hotzenwald forest. Bergalingen farmers vowed to build a chapel on the highest point of the Hotzenwald if the village remained unharmed. The cattle plague passed without causing any damage to Bergalingen. Soon after, a small wooden chapel was built. It burned down in November 1894. In 1897, the foundation stone was laid for the construction of a new stone pilgrimage chapel. The chapel is dedicated to the Holy Cross. The Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross on September 14th. However, due to weather conditions, the church consecration is celebrated here with a pilgrimage service on the first Sunday in September.Source: Information board at the Ödland Chapel
