Basilica of Birnau

The church of St. Mary, known as the "Birnau Basilica", stands on the northern shore of Lake Constance in the Birnau district of the 7,000-inhabitant resort town of Uhldingen-Mühlhofen. The Roman Catholic Birnau Basilica is one of the most important baroque pilgrimage churches in the region.

The Birnau basilica is considered the highlight of the Upper Swabian Baroque. The interior was designed in the ornamental style of the Rococo and is still overwhelming today - an effect that was intended to demonstrate the greatness of God to the faithful, the plastic representation of a magnificent heavenly afterlife (photography is prohibited in the interior - fortunately!).
