The Arnhem Rhine Bridge was the target of Operation Market Garden, with which the Allies wanted to advance into the Ruhr area in September 1944.

The John Frost Bridge (Dutch John Frostbrug, formerly Rijnbrug) is a road bridge that crosses the Nederrijn, the northwest arm of the Rhine in the Rhine-Maas Delta, in the Dutch city of Arnhem. The bridge was the subject of the 1944 Battle of Arnhem as part of Operation Market Garden. It was named 1978 after the British Major General John Frost (1912-1993).

"As part of the 1st Allied Airborne Army, the 1st British Airborne Division was deposed near Arnhem on 17 September 1944 (Action Market) .It was tasked to occupy the bridge over the Lower Rhine near Arnhem and thus the advancing ground forces ( Action Garden) to enable the passage across the Rhine to German heartland commanded by the unit of John Dutton, called "Johnny" Frost.
The commemorative plaque on the city end of the bridge recalls the events surrounding the heroic defense of the bridge by the Frost Division.
        Inscription:
"On September 17, 1944, the 1st British Airborne Division landed about 8 miles west of Arnhem with the aim of forming a bridgehead in the north of the Lower Rhine.
The 2nd Battalion, the paratrooper group, fought its way to Arnhem and occupied the buildings from which this bridge could be controlled. Here they came across other parts of their division.
For 3 days and 4 nights, the bridge was held up against units of the 2nd SS Panzer Corps until after all the ammunition had been used up and all the buildings destroyed, a small group of invaders were overwhelmed. The unit's courageous defense, cut off by enemy activity from the rest of the division, had a significant impact on leading the campaign in Holland and delaying German rebuilding efforts to secure the river crossings at Grave and Nijmegen.
In commemoration of the heroes of the First British Airborne Division, who by their sacrifice initiated the liberation of the Netherlands, the province of Gelderland has commissioned this commemorative plaque on behalf of the grateful population of the province. "
Frost regularly visited the former combat area around Arnhem. On September 16, 1978, the bridge over the Rhine near Arnhem was renamed "John Frost Bridge" in his presence in his honor. "Source: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Frost#John-Frost-Br.C3 .BCcke
