In the bustling Piazza della Frutta, fish and game, eggs and poultry, roast meats such as porchetta and boiled oxtail were sold; herbs, vegetables, and, not least, precious birds like falcons could also be found. The two side staircases that provided access to the majestic Palazzo della Ragione were named after the goods displayed and sold: they were called Scala delle Erbe (Herbs) and Scala degli Osei (Birds). Since the end of the 12th century, a popular fruit and vegetable market with wooden stalls on wheels has been held here.

Piazza della Frutta or Fruit Square, once called Piazza del Peronio, is a beautiful square in Padua dominated by the imposing Palazzo della Ragione. Along with the nearby Piazza delle Erbe, the Piazza della Frutta was the commercial center of the city for centuries. Lined with many restaurants today.
