This memorial plaque draws attention to journalist and author Michael Holzach and his book: "Deutschland umsonst" from the 80s, in which he reports on his hike across Germany. His route also led along the Emscher. He drowned nearby during filming of the book adaptation when he tried to rescue his dog from the canal. (The book is worth reading)
