Best Hikes to Haus Mödrath (Mödrath Castle)

Tips

  • The so-called "castle" Mödrath is not a castle in the true sense.
It was built around 1830 as a mansion by the then owner of the Mödrather Mühle, a merchant named Arend. Since the residential building was very large, the locals soon called it "the Mödrather Castle".
Today the castle houses an art center.

  • In the twenties of the 20th century it was the nursing home where the founder of electronic music, Karlheinz Stockhausen, was born in the summer of 1928. I already mentioned his singing of the youths from the fiery furnace from school memories, I can hear it in my inner ear, now. I witnessed two operatic premieres of his cycle light. Here the WDR wanted to accommodate the original cell of a once completely new, electronic music. Herbert Eimert founded the world's first studio for electronic music in 1951. Karlheinz Stockhausen had been its artistic director for twenty-six years since 1963, where he created world-famous compositions. Back then, the studio on Wallrafplatz was the focal point for modern electronic music. In addition to Iannis Xenakis, György Ligeti, Pierre Boulez and Mauricio Kagel, there is also Kraftwerk; was just yesterday, one way or another. The influence extends to this day in Elektro and Tecno. I heard the young men singing here again.
