The so-called Staffenbrücke over the Großache connects the town center of Kössen with the hamlets of Erlau/Staffen as well as the newly built settlements in this area.
Until 1911 there was only a narrow footbridge at this point, after which a single-lane wooden bridge was built, which was later reinforced with an iron truss structure on wooden pilots and supplemented with a sidewalk in 1982. Due to the design, the bridge was limited to a load of 6.5 tons. In 2000, due to the structural condition, the permissible load had to be reduced to 3.5 tons. The daily demands (milk tank trucks, timber transport, etc.) as well as the flood event on August 12, 2002 revealed the urgent need to replace this wooden bridge with a contemporary bridge structure.
The new bridge was built with a clear span of over 50 meters and the roadway was raised to such an extent that there is enough drainage for driftwood even during floods. It was built as a bridge class I (no limit on load capacity) with a two-lane roadway, a sidewalk and a maintenance walkway.
The total costs were approximately €1.1 million
