The city of Saint-Louis, bordering Mauritania, is located on the north-western coast of Senegal at the mouth of the Senegal River. It is the capital of the homonymous Senegalese region and has well over 200,000 inhabitants. Due to its location, Saint Louis is considered the Venice of Africa. The heart of the city is an elongated island separated from the mainland. The island is connected to the mainland via the 515 meter long Pont Faidherbe. Since the year 2000, the Île de Saint-Louis is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
