The church was first mentioned in 1291. The previous building was completely destroyed in July 1757 during the Seven Years War. In the years 1766-1804 the church was rebuilt in the baroque style. Due to static problems, only the north tower was equipped with a point, the second tower remained unfinished, which makes the church unique.

Those who are not afraid of the 266 steps up the tower will be rewarded with a panoramic view of three countries. The Zittau Mountains, Jizera Mountains and the open-cast mine in the Bogotyna alone shape the quadrant between south and east. And then there are many exciting things about the Türmer in the Zittauer Johanniskirche. The existence of a St. John's Church in Zittau was first mentioned in a document in 1291. It was a three-aisled hall church with a double tower front, which was temporarily the exile seat of the Prague cathedral chapter in the 15th century. In the years 1485 to 1531 the church was expanded into a four-aisled hall church. During the Seven Years' War (1756-1763) the church was completely destroyed on July 23, 1757. In the process, the large organ that had been erected in the church shortly beforehand by the organ builder Gottfried Silbermann was also destroyed.
