The chapel ruins lie amidst tall beech and maple trees. They were donated by the Lords of Hardheim at the beginning of the 15th century and were originally called "Chapel of Our Lady in the Forest," later "St. Catherine's Chapel in the Valley."A hermitage also stood near the chapel until 1768, before the hermit was removed. The chapel, also known as the Kirchlein, had long served as a place of pilgrimage.
