It is always distressing to see how young people have to die far from home.

At around 8.30pm on 27 December 1941 a Vickers Wellington Mk.1c crashed along the Provincialeweg in the Keelven area of Someren.

This British bomber had taken off from the RAF base Feltwell Northfolk and was destined for Düsseldorf. A successful bombardment was carried out.

On the way back the aircraft was attacked by a Messerschmit BF 110 from the second group, Nachtjagdgeschwader 1.

Five of the six crew members died:

        T. Purdy, 28 years old United Kingdom

M.J. Cronin, 21 years old, New Zealand

R.S. Scarlett, 27 years old, Australia

W J. Poulton, 26 years old United Kingdom

R.F. Aldous, age unknown United Kingdom

The sixth crew member S. Barraclough (age unknown) from Great Britain survived the crash and became a prisoner of war.
